This was the 110th Annual NAMM Show and the biggest turnout to date, with almost 100,000 Attendees, and 1400 Exhibitors from 90 different Countries. NAMM, which stands for National Association of Music Merchants, is the longest running annual trade Show that takes place yearly at the Anaheim Convention Center for musicians/businesses to see the latest musical instruments and products available. Throughout the convention, there are artist signings, product demonstrations, band performances and professional development classes. There is so much to see, and so many things to look at, you are often afraid to blink because you might miss something. The show ran from Thursday, January 19th through Sunday the 22nd.

I spent all day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the convention, and it still wasn’t nearly enough time to see everything!

My first day of NAMM was pretty good. It wasn’t too crowded yet, which gave me a chance to scope everything out and make a game plan for the weekend. I spent some time at Gibson/Epiphone with Product Specialist Doctor Wil, who gave me a detailed walk-thru of their latest guitars and basses. He showed me an acoustic that had a built in tuner in the mounting ring that was really cool. Basically you just hit a couple buttons and it tunes your guitar! He also showed me a few guitars that have USB outputs built-in and that come with a guitar rig software download. They also had a line of Kramer reissues, which were most known for their 80’s metal sound, and guitarists like Richie Sambora, Eddie Van Halen, Mick Mars, and Vivian Campbell used them back in the day.

I wandered around a bit, visiting Rock N Roll Industries Magazine, Rock-n-Roll Gangstar to say hi to the crew, Rockett Drums to say hi to Rikki and check out their new kits, and Sabian, where I ran into Randy Black from Primal Fear. Things seem to be going really well for him. His instructional drum DVD “The Black Book” came out last year, and he was excited about the brand new Primal Fear CD “Unbreakable,” that was going to be released the next day. (January 24th ) I noticed that Mapex had a really cool promo idea going on. They were taking pictures of Attendees holding up a plastic frame that said ‘Drummerface’ and then hanging them on the wall in their booth. Of course I did one!

I lost track of time for a minute, which can easily happen at NAMM, but made it to Carvin just in time to catch Marten Andersson (Lizzy Borden) and Bjorn (Yngwie). Marten described NAMM as a ‘toy store for big people.’ I couldn’t agree more. I always call it “Musician’s Heaven.” Marten is currently working on a new album with Lizzy, and they just got confirmed for Hellfest in France June 15th – 17th, along with Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, and many more.

Thursday night I went to the 6th Annual NAMM Jam at Big’s Grill in Fullerton for Skye Delamey, Dirty Little Secrets, Zen Rising and Black Vinyl. I primarily went to see Skye showcase her two most recent videos, “Thor” and “Devil in an Evening Dress,” and ended up sticking around for the next three bands. I’ve never seen Skye perform live before, and it was great to see her sing while her music videos played on TV screens throughout the bar, especially since I’m in the one for “Devil in an Evening Dress!”

Black Vinyl, who is fronted by 13-year-old Dylan Nash, stole the show. People would walk in, not knowing what to expect, and would just be mesmerized. Nash is a superstar in the making, and already has his moves and stage presence down, and he knows how to work a crowd. They have a very Led Zeppelin-ish feel to them, and even covered two Zeppelin songs, “Communication Breakdown” and “Whole Lotta Love.” It’s so nice to see young and talented musicians embrace rock n’roll. They are our future.

On Friday, I jumped right into the crowds and chaos, ready for an even bigger day. I started out at the Zoom Booth for a signing by John Temptesta from the Cult, Dave Ellefson (Megadeth) and Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple/Trapeze). It was great to meet John for the first time, since I’m a really big Cult fan, always good seeing Dave, and Glenn Hughes was super nice, and funny.

While walking the floor, I noticed a big crowd was gathered at the Paul Reed Smith Booth and saw that Dave Navarro (Janes Addiction) was doing a signing. The line was already at the cutoff point, but I was able to snap a quick picture. From a shear artistic viewpoint I am always in awe with the PRS booth.

One of the most fun parts of the day was when I happened to walk by Rockett Drum Works while Steven Adler, Rikki Rockett, and Troy Patrick Farrell were all doing pics. Of course I jumped right in next to Rikki! A&R Rep Bobby “Tango” Gibb filled me in on some of the inner workings of the company. He told me that Rockett Drum Works are a custom company that pride themselves on ‘fully custom’ drum kits and the fact that they are an American-Made company. They even make their own lugs and mounting hardware. They had as much Custom Gear as they could fit in the booth, and a lot of new graphics and hi-res graphic wraps.

Rockett Drum Works use a lot of exotic woods, such as cocobolo, rosewood, bubinga, and a variety of maples, which give the drums different tones, from rich, to dry, to bright. Bobby was excited that they are getting ready to work with a type of wood out of the Appalachian Mountains called orange osage, which has a real maple-like tone. He said that it’s a beautiful wood to work with and that it’s actually white, but when you put the lacquer on it, it turns orange. For more information on Rockett Drum Works please visit rockettdrumworks.com

I promised AC Alexander (Lizzy Borden) that I would stop by his signing at Engl, and noticed Razor from Metal Knights talking to Craig Goldy, who was also at the signing, along with Steve Morse (Deep Purple). Craig Goldy has quite a Discography and is most known for his work with Dio. He also produced Metal Knights debut album “World of Forever.” I talked to Razor, Billy, and Danik (all in Metal Knights) for a minute, and they were excited to have three songs in the can for their next album.

I also talked to AC for a bit, and he told me how he got into Lizzy Borden. He was actually a fan… and saw them play live for the first time on the Lizzy Borden/WASP tour. When they were looking for a replacement for Chris Sanders (now in Knight Fury) AC auditioned, and ended up doing some Lizzy shows with the Band, even going all the way to Japan, before they officially made him a member.

Speaking of Chris Sanders, he has recently created his own project, Knight Fury, and released their debut CD “Time to Rock.” William King, Dave Ellefson, (Megadeth) and Ken Mary (Alice Cooper/Fifth Angel) are all on the album. I kept trying to meet up with Chris all weekend, and we kept missing each other. I finally caught up with him, and his band, at the Fender Booth, where he spent a lot of time doing press and photos.

Rock-n-Roll Gangstar had a lot of cool stuff going on at their booth, including several signings throughout the Show. I stopped by while they were having one of their signings and got autographs from John Exall and Randy Cooper from Texas Hippie Coalition, Miljenco “Mili” Matijevic, (Steelheart), Robin McAuley, (MSG) and Toni Aleman (World War III). While I was there, owner and designer Daryl Boyd called out my name “Metal Babe” on his megaphone. (Thanks Daryl.) Also, Rock-n-Roll Gangstar is a great place to find my ‘circle of friends’ hanging out, and helping out.

After being an Alice Cooper fan since “Trash” came out in 1989, seeing him perform live at least a dozen times, and performing in an Alice Cooper Tribute Band, I finally had the chance to meet the Man himself.

I went to Shure for the 4pm signing, and the line was insane! It was hard to tell where the line started and ended. I knew he was doing another signing upstairs at the Fender Booth at 5pm and didn’t want to take any chances on missing him, so I headed that way. There was already a line all the way down the hall that actually went outside, so I got in. I was a bit worried that I wasn’t going to make it to the front by 6pm (when the convention ends) but I made it just in time. Security was EVERYWHERE, yelling at us to hurry up, move, leave, etc…

In the midst of all the chaos I did get the chance to shake Alice Cooper’s hand and tell him how honored I was to meet him and that I was in an Alice Cooper tribute band (Nightmare). He signed my flyer for an upcoming show and said, “You probably do Alice Cooper better than we do!” I turned around for a quick picture, while security was still yelling, and then ran out of there, almost forgetting my autograph Chuck Garric, Alice’s bass player, was handing me, and forgetting to snap a picture for my friend who had been waiting in line with me. (Sorry Steph.)

I got there bright and early on Saturday so I could have a full day. It wasn’t too crowded the first couple hours, so it was a great opportunity to walk around and check out the gear. I thought it was really cool that Charvel had their own booth for the first time. (Usually they are part of Fender) I’m a bit partial to Charvel (since I have one tattooed on my back for Criss Oliva from Savatage) and I really enjoyed checking out their production line and custom shop guitars.

The Jagermeister Girls were hanging out at the Peavey Booth, so I joined them for a few pictures. It was really fun! When I walked up they said, ‘we have another Jagermeister Girl” and then random people kept coming up and taking pictures of us and with us.

I always enjoy checking out Dean Guitars, especially their custom lines for Dimebag Darrell, Dave Mustaine, Michael Schenker, and Leslie West. This time I had a different viewpoint because I was at their factory in Tampa a couple weeks ago and saw the entire process of how the guitars are created, from a piece of wood on a palate, to the beautifully custom crafted guitars that were hanging on the walls around me. At the Show, Dean were showcasing the first ever Double-Neck Guitar, which I actually saw the prototype back at the factory before anyone else did! While at the factory, I also learned that Dimebag envisioned, and drew, in full color, all of the guitars that Dean has created in his name. It’s just so sad that he never got to play one…His memory lives on.

I just happened to run into Rex Brown from Pantera and stopped to take a quick picture, and then really lucked out by walking by Nicko McBrain, drummer for Iron Maiden, who was doing a signing at Remo. I jumped right in, and he was really cool! He kept telling me how lovely I am and telling my husband what a lucky guy he is. He even told me the story behind the little yellow aeronautical bear that sits on his bass drum.

My first official meet and greet on Saturday was scheduled for 1:30 at Samson, for Geezer Butler, (Black Sabbath) Mike Inez, (Alice in Chains) Mike Portnoy, and Billy Sheehan. However, when I arrived at the booth, I was informed that Geezer had actually left the Convention to go back to England to care for Tony Iommi, who was recently diagnosed with early-stage Lymphoma. Prayers go out to the “Iron Man.” Hopefully he is up and rockin’ again soon.

Jeff Duncan and Phil Sandoval from Armored Saint performed two songs at the Krank Booth at 3pm. I am just so glad that I ran into Jeff right before their performance, otherwise I wouldn’t have even known! Duncan and Sandoval jammed out to Saint songs “Reign of Fire” and “March of the Saint.” I LOVE Armored Saint, and it was so cool to see the two guitarists play in such an intimate setting. This was definitely one of the highlights of the entire convention. When they were done, they let fans jump up on stage to take pics with them. Of course I was one of the first ones up there!

On Saturday, I walked by Lita Ford, Warren Di Martini, and Steve Stevens while they were doing signings, and was able to snap a quick picture of each of them. I even had the chance to talk to Steve Stevens for a minute, and I told him how awesome it was to see him play at the Viper Room with Ginger Wildheart.

My other official signing of the day was at Dean Markley Strings at 4pm.

I was really looking forward to meeting Brian Wheat from Tesla. I always say that Tesla is one of the only bands that actually gets BETTER over time. Rudy Sarzo, Mike Inez, TM Stevens, and Phil Soussan were also scheduled for that signing. When I got to the front of the signing, I saw Rudy Sarzo, who is one of the most amazing bass players ever, and was happy to see Chuck Garric was next in line. It was a lot more relaxed than the Alice Signing was at Fender, so we had a chance to talk a few minutes about Alice and The Barons (a killer band that he was in) and he stood up for a picture with me. By the time I got to the end of the line I realized Brian Wheat wasn’t there.

Everyone knows that one of the best things about NAMM is the parties….And there are always so many to choose from! The Hilton Hotel is always packed, with bars, bands, rock stars, fans, and friends. And then there’s the Sheraton. I’ve heard it’s happening, but I’ve never made it there.

And then there are always bands playing outside the NAMM Show on the John Lennon Educational Stage, and at the end of the day on the Main Lobby Stage. On Friday there was a “Legends Jam” on the Main Lobby Stage that featured tons of musicians including Nicko McBrain, (Iron Maiden) Teddy Zig Zag, (Guns & Roses/Alice Cooper) Terry Hous, (XYZ, Great White) Robin McAuley, (Survivor, MSG) Frankie Banali, (Quiet Riot) Chris Slade (AC/DC/Asia) and more. Friday night was the NAMM Jam at the Grove with Testament, Jackyl, Vinnie Moore, and Wayne Static, and Stonebreed played Marquee15 in Corona with Uli Jon Roth.

featuring the Band from TV. And Saturday night there was another NAMM Show at the Grove with Seether and Filter.

Overall, I had a great experience at NAMM 2012. In addition to checking out the gear, meeting with friends, making new ones, and schmoozing with the Rock Stars, I did quite a bit of networking and have new contacts and ideas for photographers, advertising, writing, and some special events. Keep posted because “Metal Babe is Taking Over the World One Shirt at a Time” I hope that all of you will be along for the ride!

First Bank Center, Broomfield, Colorado – 11-5-11

Few metal rock bands make it big. Even fewer make it big and become legends. Even fewer still are able to maintain their legendary “metal god” status for over four decades and still continue to tour, sell out and play their shows with the fresh enthusiasm that they had when they first started out. Judas Priest has been there and done all that and then some. Most other bands would have been knocked off their post long ago, so more power to Judas Priest. They’ve rightfully earned their place in metal rock history and stood their ground.

Claiming that this is their “farewell tour”, it’s hard to believe that 40 years has come and gone so quickly and that we are seeing the last of these guys. If it really is the end for them, they are doing it up in quite a grandiose show that is absolutely phenomenal. Complete with fire pods shooting off across the back of the stage from the very first song, “Rapid Fire”, the band got the crowd in Denver, Colorado off to a fist pounding the air, fast, furious and frenzied start that was non-stop the entire two hour and 20 minute set.

Though original Priest guitarist, the beloved KK Downing, is no longer with the band, his replacement, Richie Faulkner was clearly not a disappointment to the fanatics on this night in the Mile High City. Flawlessly playing a Gibson Flying V guitar, Faulker seemed to have no problem sharing the stage and delivering the goods alongside the familiar face and high energy of Glenn Tipton as they traded exuberant guitar lick chemistry throughout the 21 song set without missing a beat. Clearly having a great time on stage, the two guitarists even managed to squeeze a smile or two out of original bassist, Ian Hill who along with drummer, Scott Travis, produced a brilliant low-end thump that was non-stop and took vibration to a whole new level.

Legendary Priest vocalist, Rob Halford, proves what really makes this band tick and why after 40 years they have not been set on the back burner on simmer. Plain and simple, Halford is worshipped by the band’s fans. Dressed in his classic leather and chains get up, I couldn’t help but wonder how this guy manages to stay so ultra cool under the hot lights with fire pods blasting while wearing such a heavy outfit, as it was hotter than a furnace in the photo pit. Regardless, this guy is definitely a hard-core metal god and he doesn’t fail to impress.

Starting out the show, Mr. Halford told the crowd that Priest would be playing a variety of songs that spanned their entire career. He wasn’t just giving lip service and the band didn’t just going through the motions. From start to finish, Judas Priest played their Rocky Mountain set with more energy and enthusiasm than a pack of wild mustangs on the range. Covering their well-known hits, “Breaking The Law” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” (complete with lots of crowd sing-a-long input!), Priest truly kept their fans in metal-heaven as they crossed into eras of long ago with tunes, “Never Satisfied”, “Starbreaker”, “Diamonds And Rust”, “Heading Out To The Highway”, “Hell Bent For Leather”, “Prophecy” amongst many, many others. While singing “Victim Of Changes”, “Judas Rising” and “Painkiller”, Halford demonstrated he is still able to hit his mark on the high notes with seemingly little effort as he spewed screams that could wake the dead to say the least.

Ending the second encore with the classic, “Living After Midnight”, Judas Priest left the stage with an arena full of happy, jubilant fans that clearly love them. It was obvious that the feelings were mutual. The band had once again left their imprint with a show that won’t too soon be forgotten by anyone there.

Even though they are calling this the Epitaph Tour, I doubt that they (being a band of this caliber) simply hang up their guitar straps and spend the rest of their days out on the golf course. However, I wouldn’t expect them to plan Epitaph Tour 2 real soon either – if at all. The occasional date here and there may end up being the extent of opportunity to witness this finely tuned machine in extreme action mode. That being said, get out and see this show while you can. Judas Priest aims to please and you won’t be disappointed.

This past year she debuted her “jump rope burlesque.” Skipping rope and a little shimmy? Why not?

The latest project Natasha can be seen in is Jack Mannequin’s music video, “Release Me.”

Last year Natasha worked as an improv host for Dreamworks at Universal Studios Singapore under a 13 month contact. While in Asia she appeared in Scene Magazine issue 3 and 4. Natasha also took advantage of her surroundings and traveled around to Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, and Sri Lanka. Upon completion of her contract her itch for travel continued and she ventured off to Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, and the UK.

Foretells his Excitement for 2012!

Megadeth’s guitarist/backing vocalist Christopher Broderick or “Chris” has been with the band since 2008 and he says it’s been a dream to have set foot into the shoes of the killer guitarists he looked up to growing up. He’s also thrilled about the return of the Gigantour, and explains how his holidays went for him and the rest of the guys and how it feels to have thirteen albums under the name that everyone knows as Megadeth!

All Access Magazine (AAM) First off, Happy New Year!

Chris: Oh thank you very much Happy New Year to you too.

AAM What was it like to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Halloween?

Chris: I think that’s what was kinda of what it had so much charm was the fact that we did it on Halloween night. We had gotten dressed up each one of us had a different monster character that we played so, I think it was awesome. The funny thing is that I’m use to coming into a show where you’re going over the riffs and your thinking about the songs you’re going to be playing and rehearsing it all mentally and that particular day of the show the whole time spent prior to the actual performance was spent in the makeup room getting the costumes ready so it was quite a experience.

AAM Did you all go trick or treating afterwards?

Chris: *Laughs* No, I actually walked Hollywood Blvd which was actually pretty crazy there were people going nuts on that street so it was interesting.

AAM What about Christmas and New Years how were those for everybody? Did you get what you wanted for Christmas?

Chris: Well I don’t know well no not necessarily think about what I want for Christmas anymore or anything like that really. I definitely did get some cool things because ya know as you get older you kind of let people surprise you than just telling them “Oh I need this or that”. So I got a cool pair of snowboarding pants and a pair of tickets to see this show when it comes to L.A. in April so that was awesome.

AAM Are you ready to be playing shows to kick off this New Year?

Chris: Oh yeah defiantly getting ready for “Gigatour:.

AAM How does it feel to have the Gigantour back in action?

Chris: I think it’s awesome because it’s funny when Gigantour does occur because there are always plans to do it annually and yearly but sometimes different offers or packages come up so it can’t always happen. So it was nice to see it return this year so we’ll just play it by year and hopefully we’ll see more it more often.

AAM Megadeth has toured all over the world but is there a spot that they have not toured?

Chris: Yeah well some of the guys may have been there but I’ve never been. Some places like Indonesian, China, and South Africa or anywhere in the continent of Africa would be cool to me.

AAM Have you had the chance to tour with the band of your dreams?

Chris: uh well if it’s unfortunate that I wouldn’t ever have that dream come true but there is always hope but me personally I would love to be able to tour with Jason Becker.

AAM What’s it been like to be playing with Megadeth? Would you say that it’s a dream come true?

Chris: Oh yes definitely. To be able to play with Megadeth which is known to have such killer guitarists and getting to be in the shoes of some of the one’s that I grew up listening too is just awesome.

AAM “Thirteen” is the third and final album to be released with Roadrunner Records, is the contract going to be renewed or has a new label come into the mix?

Chris: Well I think that all depends on Dave and Roadrunner because I’m sure he’s thinking of what the options are and what will help Megadeth the most and help build the band and help get our music out there and I’m sure that’s being considered and Roadrunner is aware of that.

AAM What has not been asked or said about “Thirteen”?

Chris: hmmm that’s a hard one because ya know you get the standard questions but I guess one off the wall question would be “What were you having for dinner when you were recording?” I’d say I had Indian food.

AAM What else can we expect from you guys for 2012?

Chris: I think ya know we’re just really looking to go out and bring the music from “Thirteen” and get it out to as many people as possible so just tour, tour, tour because that’s what we plan on doing for most of 2012.

AAM Is there anything else you’d like to say or add?

Chris: Just thanks to everyone for your support and the love of making music for them because we have fun doing it and its cool.

“Through the Rain”
www.agsongs.com
Style (Blues, Rock)

Another good blues rock CD has come my way. Right from the start I dig the guitar playing of Alastair Greene and the subtle Skynardesque undertones. The guitar sound is full bodied with a grinding lived in quality, with hints of unfiltered tobacco and whisky as smooth as 40 grit sandpaper. The guitar solos are expressive saying “yeah, check out these cajones!” Reading the credits on the disc, Greene handled much of the instrument playing, except where noted, and aside from being impressed with his 6 string capabilities, I really dig his low-mid range vocals and how perfectly they fit the tone and character of all the instruments. Truly an excellently mixed collection of songs. My one negative though is that I’m not hearing that “one” song that puts it all together for marketing purposes, but maybe I’m just missing it.

Rating 4 (the live set is where this stuff will shine)

The Super Bowl Half Time Show has been home to many memorable guitar moments, and Super Bowl XLVI will be no exception. Phillip Jarrell of Jarrell Guitars announced at the 2012 NAMM Show the first live performance of the revolutionary new Monte Pittman Signature Jarrell MPS guitar during Super Bowl KLVI Halftime Show on Sunday, February 5th, courtesy of Monte Pittman, Grammy Award winning artist Madonna’s guitarist for the past ten years. NAMM Show 2012 attendees had the first opportunity to get ‘hands on, up close and personal’ with the instrument, experiencing its unique vibe.

Pittman and his Signature Jarrell guitar join an extraordinary group of guitarists who have performed at Super Bowl Half Time Shows, including Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash who stole the show from The Black Eyed Peas and Usher in 2011, Bruce Springsteen, who showed viewers that he was still “The Boss” with a crowd pleasing around the body guitar spin in 2009, and Prince, whose 2007 guitar solo was played behind a transparent sheet and held in a way that left critics deeming it “Phallic.” In 2006, Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones banged it out with a boldness that was touted as a “raw, dirty, guitar sound, and in 2002, The Edge joined U2 and Bono in 2002 for a hypnotic guitar solo on “Where The Streets Have No Name.”

The Monte Pittman Signature Jarrell MPS is the result of the collaboration between the award winning visionary designer Phillip Jarrell and world renowned artist, writer, and guitarist Monte Pittman. Pittman plays so many different styles of music during any given performance that, until now, he required many different types of guitars to accommodate his needs. Utilizing Pittman’s feedback, Jarrell Guitars worked with MJ at the Seymour Duncan Shop to transform the finest MPS guitar at the time into something completely new – the most versatile instrument ever made. The Monte Pittman Signature Jarrell MPS boasts a mega set of Seymour Duncan pickups with a P-Rail neck, STk-S7 Vintage Hot Stack middle and a custom design SH-13 Dime Bucker Bridge. Both neck and bridge have 3 position mini switches, with custom wiring using a Super 5 way switch, and a kill switch. All together it seems Monte Pittman and Jarrell Guitars are hell bent on rocking the world – the sound of which is none other than simply amazing.

Jarrell Guitars was named “2010 Manufacturer of the Year” at the Music Industries Association of Canada (MIAC) Show in Canada, and has received accolades from PremierGuitar.com.

Interview by Alison “MetalBabe” Cohen

Skye Delamey was put on this planet to create music. She literally fell in love with music before she could even walk. From the moment she crawled over to her first organ, she had found her destiny. To date, Skye has released three CD’s, has a fourth CD “Skye’s Wonderland” in the works for 2012, and has even directed five of her own music videos. She recently released her first entirely acoustic CD, “Songstress Secrets: Confessions of the soul,” and has started her own online magazine, Stacatto.tv, which is a place for her to share her knowledge of Music Theory and to really give back to the Community.

All Access Magazine (AAM) : I’ve really enjoyed preparing for this interview, listening to your music, and watching your videos. I love the musical variety that you have, and how every song has a concept. And they are all different. Let’s start out by talking about your latest album “Songstress Secrets: Confessions of the soul.” What inspired you to record an acoustic album?

Skye Delamey: I wanted to shed light on vocals and the piano as the complex instrument that it is, and really highlight the piano as a bass instrument, and as a treble instrument. Throughout the years people have told me that I really need to put something like this out so they can hear what I can do vocally, and, kind of… unproduced. Not to say I’m staying at the acoustic stuff, but I wanted to have an album like that, and I was excited to do it.

AAM: Very cool. It’s great to have the variety. I love the most recent video you did for “Thor,” especially the way the lightning crashes behind you while you’re playing the piano. It really conveys a lot of emotion. How did you get the idea for this song and video?

SD: Well, it was 2008…The night of L.A.’s biggest thunderstorm, as far as I’m concerned. As an L.A. Native, I’ve never in my life seen rain and lightning bolts to that extent. It was as if I was struck that night, by a musical bolt of lightning. I sat at the piano and songs just came through me, almost as a cosmic source. I was very compelled to just write a song in honor of Thor, the God of thunder and lightning, and “Thor” just came to me.

AAM: Well, you did a great job on that video. There are a couple songs on the album were actually inspired by loved ones from the other side….. Can you tell me more about “Another Chapter” and “I See You There?”

SD: When my Grandpa died, my Mom was so devastated. I just wanted to reach out to her in a spiritual way. There is really nothing that you can buy somebody when they’re hurting over the loss of a loved one. There’s almost nothing you can do. But I felt like a Medium in a way, and I asked my Grandpa what in the world can I possibly do to help heal her pain, and that song, which initially was a poem, came through me about another chapter. He is on the other side in another chapter of being.

AAM: And then the other one, “I See You There,” is for your Grandma?

SD: Yes. That’s for my Grandma. And that one also came through me, almost as a conduit or a Medium….My Mom’s parents were both born deaf and mute, and they were together for 78 years. So it’s really unusual that their first Grandchild, me, ended up being a singer and a songwriter, and I’m all about music and lots of loudness. It was as if I was their voice, reaching out to my Mom, trying to heal her pain.

AAM: Wow. That is amazing….Your musical style is very versatile. You can go from beautifully melodic, to heavy, to punk rock, and then back again. Which style is your favorite? And do you see yourself leaning towards a certain direction in the future?

SD: Over the years I have been advertised as ‘heavy girl rock,’ so I love that genre…but I love the melodic stuff as well. And, ultimately, whether it’s melodic, punk rock, or whatever it is, it has to rock. Also, all the songs, no matter what they are, they also start in that raw state. Even “Francis Farmer” can be played acoustically, with just singing and playing piano. But, no matter what it is, as a songwriter it’s a good indication if you’re able to break it down.

AAM: I was going to ask you about “Francis Farmer.” That’s another video that really stood out to me. It’s definitely one of your heavier songs too. Is this song based on a true story?

SD: It’s in honor of Francis Farmer, the Actress. But it also just sheds light on all the victims of psychiatric drug abuse, including children that are given Ritalin for being creative. “Francis Farmer” was inspired by a trip to CCHR.Org on Sunset Blvd. It’s an organization that advocates for people’s rights, and citizen’s rights, and are against foolishly giving out psychiatric drugs to people that don’t need it.

AAM: It’s good that you’re making it known any way that you can. You are a natural for making videos. It seems you just keep cranking them out. And they are all so visually appealing, unique, and creative. How do you come up with the ideas for your videos, and which comes first, the song or the idea for the video?

SD: Well the song always comes first. And to me as a songwriter, making a video is a visual way of writing a song. It’s like putting your creative vision into a creative format. I’ve had a huge background in acting. And I’ve studied all of that. But I never thought I could make videos, and direct them. But working with wonderful people just inspired me to put my vision into a video format. It’s the same process as songwriting.

AAM: Very cool. Have you thought about directing music videos for other artists?

SD: (laughs) Oh…If I could wear that many hats, I would. I just can’t… What I did, it was because it was very fun, and inspiring; a natural process. But my main passion is music. I am put on the planet to sing and write songs. I gotta focus on my main attraction and passion in life.

AAM: Definitely. So has this been a lifelong passion for you? How did you start playing the piano and singing?

SD: It definitely has been a lifelong passion…Probably from the time I was born! My Dad played, and still plays, the accordion. And as a toddler, it was just lying around. I would crawl over to it and play with the piano keys. I literally fell in love with the ‘magical black keys.’ Literally fell in love… And that was my dream in life, to play piano and sing. So I am very grateful.

AAM: Wow. You did fall in love at a very young age… What types of training have you received?

SD: I have had a whole lot of training. But there is a lot that you discover on your own. I didn’t like a lot of my training. I was kind of rebellious, and I had a hard time with a lot of my music teachers that were more serious. I didn’t like being put in a box. Finally, I rebelled enough to attract the right teacher. And she said to me, Skye, if you wanna sing, feel it with all your heart and really connect with the message of the song. And there was really no looking back after that.

There comes a time when you love something so much that you go beyond what you’re taught and you really discover it. There’s so much out there that once you learn the basics you’re hungry to learn more and there are so many complex cords and keys and different ways of singing. I just really was on a roll to learn all I could, beyond the normal.

AAM: In addition to singing, songwriting, and directing, you recently started your own online magazine Stacatto.tv. What is the primary focus of your magazine and what goals would you like to accomplish with it?

SD: Stacatto.tv is a way to give back to the music community and to take my knowledge of music theory and really showcase that. And that’s why it’s called Stacatto, the musical theory term. I used to run a business called musical transformations, and I gave voice lessons at the time, and songwriting consulting, and things like that. I wanted to take what I knew of that and really showcase music as a language. Not just music the lifestyle, but music for what it really is. To give tips to artists, and put a spotlight on actors and businesspersons… Anyone can place an ad on the Spotlight section of Stacatto.tv. It’s a way to showcase what each individual person has to offer.

AAM: Sounds great. Is there anything else that you’d like to share with our Readers?

SD: I’d like to share my website www.skyedelamey.com where you have links to different sites with music and things like. Also check out my YouTube station at www.youtube.com/skyedelamey

AAM: Thank you for your time Skye. I see great things happening for you and I wish you all the best in 2012.

Winchester Rebels have arrived on the rock scene with the goal of putting themselves on the rock ‘n’ roll map and moving onto the national stage where they rightly belong. As Kid Rock says, “it ain’t bragging if you can back it up” – and this talented rock group, as heard on their new album Three Sheets To The Wind as well as the band’s high-energy live show, can do just that.

Three Sheets To The Wind has just been nominated for “Rock Album Of The Year” by the 2012 (22nd Annual) Los Angeles Music Awards.

Winchester Rebels host and headline a Benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club, 1221 State Street, Santa Barbara, Thursday, February 16. 8 p.m. Buy tickets here: www.digitalomni.eventbrite.com. Also performing: Orange County band A Broken Opera and Seven Year War.

All Access Magazine (AAM) recently interviewed the band’s front person, Nick Hunt (NH). This is how it went.

AAM: Who are Winchester Rebels?

NH: We are a bunch of fun-loving guys that like to get a little sideways, do a burn out, a wheelie (Bike or moto), launch off something and get some air, and just plain rock out. We enjoy Coors Light, pizza, burritos, and a little sushi if we are feeling pendy! We are not trying to conform to the trends in music. We play what we like and what moves us and if you don’t get it then I guess you just don’t get us but we can still be friends!

AAM: Interesting name for a band, how did it come to be?

NH: Our ex-bassist Johnny “Reno” came up with “Winchester Radio” when he was living in Goleta on Winchester Canyon. I liked “Winchester” but thought the “radio” was a little too indie or soft so I came up with “Rebels” and that’s how we became Winchester Rebels.

AAM: The background behind how a group forms is often an interesting one, definitely something that doesn’t happen at the snap of a finger. What’s your story?

NH: Johnny “Reno” and I put it together. We had bands before but they were punk, indie rock, post hardcore, emo, whatever you want to call it and we decided to try and get back to our roots in 90′s rock. At least, that was my idea. Santa Barbara is one of those places where band members get recycled because truthfully there aren’t that many talented people in our small town. We got our buddy Nick Fitzgerald to play guitar. He got his old drummer Barry Carter to move up to SB from the OC to play drums for us. We tried out some second guitarists and had no luck when we remembered our buddy James Longoria was looking to jam. It worked out great. We knew we had something special after one practice.

AAM: Okay, so let’s talk about your new album “Three Sheets To The Wind,” what did you have in mind when this was recorded?

NH: We wanted to create a great hard rock album from start to finish. “Three Sheets To The Wind,” I thought, was an old sailing term that meant full speed ahead but it actually refers to the ropes that hold the sails being loose causing the boat to shudder and flop around like a drunken sailor. Either way, I liked it. We consumed a lot of alcohol during the writing and recording of this album so it was also very fitting in that respect (laughs).

AAM: Discuss the lyrics and meaning behind some of the songs that are on “Three Sheets To the Wind.”

NH:”These pills I’ve been taking have made me numb and I want to feel” (“Dining with Devils”). I wrote this after I had knee surgery. I was feeling like crap because of all the pain meds I was taking so I just stopped taking them and dealt with the pain instead. I think to heal, sometimes we need to feel the pain and not numb it with drugs. “Failing everything I try, never making grades with you” (“Down”). This line is about being frustrated in a relationship where you try to do the right thing to make someone happy but it just never seems to pan out. Some of the lyrics I write just come out unconsciously. A lot of times when we are writing I don’t really put much thought into words as much as the melodies but when I hear it back, it makes sense to me why certain words or feeling come out in my music. I guarantee if you like hard rock you will find a song on this album that moves you.

AAM: What kind of impact do the Winchester Rebels hope to make on the rock scene in the long run?

NH: We would love to be that new band that comes out of nowhere and takes the country by storm. We want to bring real hard rock back to the masses. We want to be the band that just keeps getting better and stays on your iPod or stereo for years and years to come.

AAM: Let’s talk gigs – where have you performed, what was the band’s best gig, what was your least favorite, etc?

NH: Mainly in Central and Southern California so far. We had a really good show at The Viper Room in Hollywood a while back….we also played a fun house party where we were crammed into this little living room and the house was packed with people rocking out. Basically any show with a good crowd makes for a fun show! I want to feel that energy from the crowd. That’s what makes it fun. Least favorite show we played was in Lompoc (Calif) at this place called the Shamrock. Let’s just say it was a trainwreck. We don’t like to even talk about it. Everything that could go wrong went wrong that night.

AAM: Going forward, what’s the 5-year plan look like for Winchester Rebels?

NH: Play some key shows with some big-name acts, get our music out to a international audience, get a record deal, record a hit record and just play our asses off!

Where previous records incorporated themes of edgy, crazed, slum-dwelling visionary junkies, this time they are relying on slick production and concept-like tunes. Perry Farrell stands out as one of music’s most forward-thinking and enigmatic frontman in the business with his vocals soaring with vibrancy, vulnerability, and vitality. Guitar god Dave Navarro conjures up psychedelic and epic riffs. Stephen Perkins’ tribal stomp remains hypnotic and transfixing. Jane’s Addiction the band has been around for nearly 30 years and proves that they are frontrunners in alternative music.

In 2010, Jane’s Addiction began writing songs for the new album. By 2011, recording began on what would become “The Great Escape Artist’” on Capitol/EMI records to be supported with a worldwide tour 2012. The band and producer Rich Costey, (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol) added TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek to the creative team.

The addition of Sitek writing music with Navarro and Perkins pointed the record in a decidedly alternative direction. Farrell’s melodies and lyrics completed the picture, the results of which created a more natural progression of Jane’s music for their inception as the creators of alternative rock as they now step into 2012 with a very modern-sounding record that somehow magically still harkens back to the original vibe of the group. Some fans may think the band has sold out but with this new paring with Sitek they really thrust themselves into the 21st century.

Taking a more musical approach, the members switched off on instruments and stretched out a bit, as Navarro played some bass, Sitek played some guitar, and Perkins experimented with several new percussion instruments. The group even brought in long time touring member and session player extraordinaire, Chris Chaney, to play additional bass.

To further the experimentation JA enlisted the help of Masters of Musicians of Joujouka, originally discovered by Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones in the late 60’s to create the lush but bizarre background to their first released track from the new set called, “End to the Lies.” The Master of Musicians of Joujouka recorded their parts in the wilds Morocco.

Acclaimed for their swirling sonic symphony and unique studio alchemy, Jane’s Addiction have sold over seven million records in the U.S. alone. They’ve also garnered Grammy nominations and spearheaded the movement of the modern American festival culture by launching and headlining Lollapalozza. Even during dormant periods, their classical songs pulsated through rock radio constantly and their influence resounded through countless acts.

Staring off this intriguing and conceptual album is the track, “Underground,” showing off the haunting guitar of Dave Navarro, driving rhythms, and inspiring lyrics classically putting forth their slum-dwelling past experiences. “End to Lies,” about a broken relationship, being down and out was leaked in April 2011 on Chilean radio when Jane’s Addiction headlined Lollapalooza Chili in Santiago at the first official Lollapalooza stages outside the U. S. A final mix of the initial song was released online a month later along with a striking video directed by Alex Bulkley from Robot Chicken fame.

The group’s first single, “Irresistible Force,” is a cosmic love story, ghost-like vibe, and spacey. “Curiosity Kills,” has an Edge-like inspired guitar groove and some soaring vocals courtesy of flamboyant Farrell. “I’ll Hit You Back,” a faulting relationship is one of the stronger songs on the disc with a majestic hooky chorus. The songs “Ultimate Reason,” with its message of love being the ultimate reason in life and the strong influence of STP glossing over in the background. “Splash A Little Water On It,” is a spacey movement, but overall an epic track. And rounding out the rest of the record is, “Words Right Out of My Mouth,” starting with a monologue from a therapist session where Farrell jumps right in but the song feels jumbled and chaotic probably better off closing the album with, “Broken People.”

Underlying the entire concept album is the idea of the underbelly of Los Angeles with its carnival of freaks, hustlers, and street corner visionaries of all kinds. Below the veneer of Hollywood’s lights lies a counter culture driven by escapism. Whether it’s via carnal, mental, physical, chemical, or aural pleasures the quirky court thrive on escape. Jane’s Addiction fourth album “The Great Escape Artist,” could only have been born within this realm. Spun through a kaleidoscope of tightly wound riffs, hypnotic harmonies, booming beats and an unmistakable howl, the record announces the beginning of the next chapter for the alternative rock torchbearers.

Jane’s Addiction is Perry Farrell (vocals), Dave Navarro (guitar), and Stephen Perkins (drums). The band began working in 2010 on what would become “The Great Escape Artist.”

Interview by Alison “MetalBabe” Cohen

Richie Onori is a multi-talented musician and versatile percussionist who released two CD’s with Stuart Smith’s band Heaven and Earth, and has a new album in the works. He also teamed up with Stuart Smith in Sweet about five years ago and has toured extensively with them. Richie Onori is currently focusing on his Solo Career, and will be releasing two CD’s in 2012, “The Days of the Innocence” and “American Fighters.”

All Access Magazine (AAM): First of all, congratulations on being nominated for Artist of the Month on Rockwired.com. You have my vote!

Richie Onori: Thank you so much !

AAM: You definitely have a lot going on these days, with your Solo Material, Sweet, your work with Stuart Smith, and you have two of your own businesses. Let’s start off by talking about the first of your two upcoming releases, “Days of Innocence.” What can you tell us about the CD?

RO: I am so very much excited about “The Day’s of Innocence.”

It has some poignant messages, storytelling, and a few “about love” types of tunes. One song is called “Goodbye Cruel World.” I guess you can figure out what that’s about; I had a couple of bad months…

AAM: What is the meaning behind the title track?

RO: It’s about me and people that experienced the 60’s 70’s and 80’s musical renaissance and growing up in this magical musical time. Things are different now. Sometimes I wished I could back to those times when life and families were different.

The last lyrics of the song are:

NOW THE WORLD’S A DIFFERENT PLACE

PEOPLE LOST IN CYBERSPACE

WITH YOUR CELL PHONES YOU CAN’T REPLACE

HAS THE MUSIC DIED

AAM: What is the expected Release Date for the CD?

RO: Gerry Gallagher from Sola records (www.solalabel.com) and I are shooting for a late March/April release and launch.

AAM: You also plan on releasing another CD, “American Fighters,” some time in 2012. What inspired you to release a full-length concept CD?

RO: I think many artists like to make statements about what’s wrong in the world and offer their own beliefs to bring about awareness through their songs. My inspiration comes from my own experience of knowing and understanding the truth on what’s behind the curtain. I think mankind is at tipping point and now it is my time to make a statement through my music.

AAM: Your CD focuses on messages of truth, awareness, and change. What is the most important message that you are trying to get across?

RO: Many of my protest type songs on “American Fighters” were written in the 90’s and early 2000 and I find them extremely relevant in today’s menacing world. Many issues I cover are addressing greed, the environment, politics, inappropriate taxes, drugs, both prescription and street. Additionally we need our people to come together instead of being sidetracked and confused by the suppressive and oppressive forces. Finger pointing is what they want us to do and thus picking a side is what people are conned into believing. It’s just a trap. We need to go after the correct targets, and that’s what I try to do with the messages that come through my music.

AAM: Do you have any plans to do a solo tour or any upcoming shows in the works?

RO: Yes, in the works. We are talking about dates in Japan and Europe, but first we will do some local warm up gigs before we have the launch party gig! Stay tuned www.richieonori.com. We are putting together an all-star band for the shows.

AAM: That’s awesome. I will definitely keep a lookout. I saw on your website that you will be at NAMM this year. Will you be doing a Signing or Performing?

RO: I have two companies in which I am the owner www.onoriintl.com and www.albionUS.com. I will be doing business, meeting folks, talking, and possibly performing.

AAM: Wow. That sounds great. I was going to ask you about your businesses. In addition to being a World Class Drummer and known Musician, you have your own Fashion Line for Musicians called Onori International Guitar Straps. It launched just about six years ago, and to date is in 2000 stores in the U.S. and in 22 Countries. That is absolutely amazing! How did you start your Line, and can you tell us the ‘secret to your success?’

RO: Well I listened to my Grandfather’s advice. If you are going to be an artist you better have a back up plan. Now that I see so many of my music biz friends eating “you know what” I’m glad I did. Somehow I managed to keep my artistry #1. I must say it’s been like a minefield. Put it this way. I had to fire a lot of my girlfriends and wives. I don’t have a lot of time for B.S. And that has been part of my secret. As far as starting my guitar strap line, I just created, with the help of some very talented artists, a line of straps that I believe were missing in the marketplace.

AAM: What advice would you have for someone (like me) who is just starting out his or her own business?

RO: Have enough funding and pack a big lunch because you will need it.

AAM: It looks like you are also involved with Albion Amplifiers. What is your affiliation with them?

RO: I am the U.S. distributor for this incredible Amp line. The AMP guru “Steve Grindrod, who designed the entire Marshall product from 1973 to 2000, and then designed the VOX reissue product, is the co-owner in the company. The reviews have been spectacular.

AAM: How long have you been in Sweet and how did you originally connect with them?

RO: Stuart Smith, whom is been my partner in the group “Heaven & Earth,” did a Hurricane Katrina benefit concert back in 2001. That night I was pretty much the drummer for all the artists and acts, which included Slash, Steve Lukather, and Keith Emerson. Steve Priest, the original bass player for “The Sweet,” came up and we did “Fox on the Run” and several other Sweet hits. It was like magic and years later when Steve got the itch to rock again it was a no brainer to work with one another.

AAM: Very cool. Sweet also has a brand new album in the works, with a scheduled release date of March 2012. Are you on that CD? And if so, what can you tell us about it?

RO: Actually we released a live record a few months ago- Check it out. www.thesweetband.com I think you’ll like it!

AAM: Oops! I thought I saw that somewhere. I will definitely check it out. How does it compare to previous releases from Sweet?

RO: What I’ve heard from all the reviews so far is it’s being touted as the real deal. I must say we rock hard live! As far as a new record get ready for a new “Heaven & Earth” record it’s monumental. After that I hope to be creating a new “Sweet” record with the boys.

AAM: Let’s talk about your background, and the direction that you have been taking in recent years. You are most known as a Drummer, and in recent years you have worked as a Vocalist, Songwriter, and even played several different instruments. What inspired you to explore these other avenues?

RO: I needed to express myself fronting a band plus I’m a ham and I’m sick of all my band mates being out in front while I’m trapped in the back. Just kidding…Kind of.

AAM: (Laughs) Do you see yourself leaning in a certain direction at this point, or favoring one instrument over another, aside from drums?

RO: No. I love it all.

AAM: Is there anything else that you’d like to share with our Readers?

RO: Be prepared to rock and I really want to have all you guys come to my shows. It’s important that you all support live music and most important, mine. Just kidding,…kind of. See you at NAMM.

AAM: Thank you so much for your time Richie. It’s been an honor doing this interview. Hopefully I get the chance to meet you at NAMM.
