Virtuoso ensemble, ten-piece horn section and a full orchestra string section help propel the eclectic mix of jazz due June 5th

27 March 2012 (Sherman Oaks, CA): Grammy nominated bass maestro Brian Bromberg continues to blaze his own audacious path through the jazz kingdom on “Compared To That,” which will be released June 5th by Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Records. For his 20th solo collection of kinetic and combustible jazz of various forms, Bromberg produced, composed eight new songs, and herded a ten-piece horn section, a full orchestra string section and a prodigious collective of prominent musicians. The first track to go to radio is his swinging take on the snappy Chicago hit, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”

It’s been a while since Bromberg recorded an album that swings so he primarily maintains a fast cadence on “Compared To That.” Although the record leans towards straight ahead acoustic jazz, Bromberg refuses to color between the lines. His visionary, multihued jazz palette swirls hard-charging swing, contemporary sheen, deep-fried funk, and touchingly beautiful balladry. Throughout the album, Bromberg’s basswork is like a master’s class with the astute musician playing acoustic, electric and piccolo (both acoustic and steel string) basses. With his piccolo basses tuned to sound like guitar, all of the lead melodies and solos throughout the collection that sound like guitar are actually piccolo bass. An accomplished cadre lent their talents to the two days of live tracking including Alex Acuna, Gannin Arnold, Charlie Bisharat, Randy Brecker, Vinnie Colaiuta, George Duke, Bela Fleck, Mitch Forman, Larry Goldings, Jeff Lorber, Gary Meek and Tom Zink. Bromberg’s tongue-in-cheek humor was deftly deployed when it came to titling his original compositions – “Rory Lowery, Private Eye,” “If Ray Brown Was A Cowboy?,” “A Little New Old School” and “I’m Just Sayin’” are a few examples – and his flair for choosing unexpected songs to cover shines brightly on an imaginative, toe-tapping rendition of the Rick James signature hit “Give It To Me Baby.”

“One thing I feel that makes ‘Compared To That’ a unique project is that it is a live jazz recording that also has a ten-piece horn section on many tracks, a full orchestra string section on two cuts, and the production of a much bigger project. Essentially, it really was a two-day live jazz recording session along with 3-1/2 months of the kind of production used on big pop records. I truly blended the best of both worlds: live acoustic jazz with the audiophile of a major production,” explained Bromberg, who previewed the album at a Sunday brunch performance at the Berks Jazz Fest in Reading, Pennsylvania this past weekend (March 25). “I went more to my jazz roots on this CD with a lot of swing and walking bass. All in all, I think it is a fun listen for a true jazz CD and I am very proud of it.”

On July 3rd, Bromberg will release a couple more inspired recording projects: “Bromberg Plays Hendrix,” a tribute to iconic guitarist Jimi Hendrix previously released in Japan that was made without any guitars, again playing the piccolo bass to the tune of a guitar, and “In The Spirit of Jobim,” which pays homage to Antonio Carlos Jobim on a collection of tunes made famous by the fabled Brazilian and original songs penned by the bassist emulating Jobim’s style.

A native of Tucson, Arizona who recorded and mixed “Compared To That” while comfortably ensconced in his suburban Los Angeles home studio, Bromberg is respected as a musician with integrity who is gifted with a unique ability to make music at a scholarly level accessible and digestible to the mainstream masses. He landed his breakthrough professional gig at age 18 when tapped to tour for nearly a year playing in legendary jazz saxophonist Stan Getz’s band. Bromberg released his solo debut, “A New Day,” in 1986. To date, he has scored handfuls of top 10 hits and a pair of #1 singles as a soloist and as a writer and producer for other artists. Recognized as an innovator, he has played acoustic and electric bass on recordings and performances with a luminous encyclopedic list of musicians that spans the spectrum of jazz and popular music ranging from Dizzy Gillespie , Sarah Vaughn, Herbie Hancock, Dave Grusin and Nancy Wilson to Sting, Elvis Costello, and Steven Tyler, and from Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Dianna Krall, Andrea Bocelli and David Foster to George Benson, Bob James, Lee Ritenour, Kenny G, Chris Botti, Boney James and Dave Koz. Rob Zombie / ex-Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5 will be making a guest appearance on the new Adler album.  The session is scheduled to take place tomorrow (Wednesday, March 21st) at a studio in Los Angeles.

Adler is the new band led by former Guns N Roses drummer Steven Adler.  The line-up features frontman Jacob Bunton (Lynam, Mars Electric), and Lonny Paul (Adler’s Appetite).  “I love the music that we’re creating!” states Adler.  I haven’t been this excited about my band since the GNR days.  Jacob is exactly the singer I have been searching for.  He has an amazing range and is a great writer and frontman.  Lonny is an amazing guitarist and songwriter and the vibe is perfect!”

The band is currently in a Los Angeles recording studio working on their debut album with producers Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Foreigner) and Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Steel Panther, Adrenaline Mob).  The album feature a guest appearance from Adler’s former Guns N Roses band mate Slash.  “I’m so excited for everyone to hear this record!” States Adler.

Adler, guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin will all be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame next month in Cleveland, along with later Guns N Roses members, keyboardist Dizzy Reed and drummer Matt Sorum.

 Fast forward to 2009, Michael Olivieri (vocalist/guitarist) put out his first solo album, Goodbye Rain. His passion for playing multiple instruments stands out on this modern take on classic rock.

Now Michael has formed a band called the MICHAEL OLIVIERI BAND which in January 2012 released their first album together titled “M.O.B.”. The band also consists of long time band-mate Dan Lucett, Buzzy James, KK Martin, Paul Wilson, Tom Croucier and Eric Von Herzen.

The seven got together in Michael’s living room in Fall 2011 than went into FOR THE RECORD STUDIOS to lay down the tracks. All 7 of the band members began multi-tracking, capturing that real band sound. The album was produced by Michael and mixed by legendary producer Kevin Beamish (Kenny Chesney, REO, Leatherwolf).
The guys have created a new musical genre which has a southern rock, country, classic rock and outlaw country feel.

As with our press projects at New Ocean Media, we want to spread the music in the form of interviews, CD reviews and whatever you might have in mind.

Pittman and his Signature Jarrell guitar join an extraordinary group of guitarists who have performed at Super Bowl Half Time Shows, including Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash who stole the show from The Black Eyed Peas and Usher in 2011, Bruce Springsteen, who showed viewers that he was still “The Boss” with a crowd pleasing around the body guitar spin in 2009, and Prince, whose 2007 guitar solo was played behind a transparent sheet and held in a way that left critics deeming it “Phallic.” In 2006, Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones banged it out with a boldness that was touted as a “raw, dirty, guitar sound, and in 2002, The Edge joined U2 and Bono in 2002 for a hypnotic guitar solo on “Where The Streets Have No Name.”

The Monte Pittman Signature Jarrell MPS is the result of the collaboration between the award winning visionary designer Phillip Jarrell and world renowned artist, writer, and guitarist Monte Pittman. Already dubbed the New British Invasion after just one week of live performances in Los Angeles, the Black Country’s ISOLATED ATOMS are poised to spread their dark eighties drama worldwide.   The boys from the UK have been compared to The Cult, Muse and Interpol by industry insiders.  Shortly after their first single ‘Tell Me What I Want’ (pps-music.co.uk) debuted and played on indie stations across the pond, DJ Paul Ripman (Radio Manchester) declared the track ‘Single of the Year’.

With their Joy Division-esque vibe ISOLATED ATOMS began their invasion of America at the Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood.

They followed up immediately with another successful show supporting The Tubes at Redondo Beach’s The Brixton.  Vocalist Grant Leon Ashman, guitarist Mark Neat, keyboardist and bassist David Davies, and drummer Yang are not only easy on the eyes, but write incredible songs.   Known in the UK for their unique and electrifying live performances Ashman has earned the reputation of a cross between legendary front man Jim Morrison and movie monster Hannibal Lecter.  “I think a lot when I’m on stage; I get into a different space and worlds up there,” he explains.  “Plus I get off on just staring at people making myself feel quite intense.  I love the audience’s reactions,” he laughs.

Adding star power aura, the band recorded ‘Tell Me What I Want’ at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool.  “The Studio had loads of history and character,” explains Ashman.  Not only did Coldplay write many of their hits there, Echo & the Bunnymen and Oasis also used the studio.

Discovered by manager Steve Burrows of PPS Music Ltd. two years ago while the band was performing in a local bar in their hometown of West Midlands, England, Neat refers to Burrows as a 5th band member.  “He liked what he saw and ever since then he has been the driving force behind the band.”  Then he adds, “He is just as important as any one of us.”

Davies labels their sound ‘Dark and Danceable’ influenced by Dark 80’s Drama.  “We started listening to music together and discovered we all grew up liking Depeche Mode and other great 80’s bands like The Cult,” he says, “and our sound developed as we went along.”   “We also tend to describe our music as English Black Country Electric Rock,” adds Yang.  The band has been influenced by everyone from New Order, INXS and Bauhaus to Gary Numan and David Bowie to Radiohead, The Prodigy and Massive Attack… and Johnny Cash!

The success of their first single piqued the interest of Peter Hook (of Joy Division and New Order fame) so much so that Atoms collaborated with Hook for their next track ‘Play’.   The group followed that with the haunting ‘Here We Go’, which sounds much like where Joy Division would have picked up if not for the passing of lead singer Ian Curtis.

Their latest single, the power ballad ‘How I’ve Tried’ is romantically delicious prompting Davies to comment, “We want to do music that sounds really sexy, you know what I mean?” with a mischievous grin.  ISOLATED ATOMS tracks are available on Spotify (in the UK), iTunes and www.isolatedatoms.com .

Keeping to the schedule of shooting a video for a new song every two months, Society 1 releases  “Scream Out Your Breath” in just under sixty days after debuting the band’s first new single and video (“I Got You”) in five years. The video, directed and edited by lead vocalist Lord Zane, is a varied departure from the hectic, and at times psychedelic, initial offering. The band wanted to a take different approach to each song, making them an extension to the music.  And this video is an example of Zane expressing his desire for a dear friend that passed away in recent years.

“I had a very close and important friend named Missy pass away a few years ago. The circumstances surrounding her at the time of death were always extremely upsetting to me, although I understand the reasoning for me not being asked to be by her side in the final moments. There is nothing I wouldn’t have done to hold her hand and be with her as she passed” said Zane.

“This video is an expression of my love for her, and if it was possible I would have carried her as far as I could into the next life. Everything in the video has a meaning such as this. Some things may seem a little out of place but it is my way of showing respect and keeping her in my heart.”
